Eva (Ewa) KOPINEC (nee TUTKO)

Eva was born June 3, 1934, in the village of Regietiw, Lemkivshchyna, Ukraine. She was the youngest of five girls; two brothers died at birth. During WW 2, the northern part of Regietiw became Poland. Life was difficult growing up, since her father passed away when she was 4 years old. Before she could complete grade 4, her mother took her out of school to go to work on the farm to help ends meet. She was unable to return to school to complete her education.

In January 1964, Eva made her way to Whitehorse, Yukon, where her cousin Antonia Hapak resided. She married on February 22, 1964, to Ambrose Kopinec. They were blessed with two children Mark and Maria. Eva and Ambrose raised their children in Whitehorse and were strong believers in the Catholic faith and attended Sacred Heart Parish. Eva was predeceased by her husband Ambrose on May 13, 1982, her four sisters and their husbands.

In the summer of 2018, Eva moved to Edmonton, Alberta, and resided between Mark’s and Maria’s homes. She was sad to move from Whitehorse because she had so many friends and would miss going out with them for coffee and lunch. She did keep in touch with friends in Whitehorse through phone calls and Christmas cards. In Edmonton, her happiest times were celebrating special occasions with family and new friends.

Sadly, on October 30, 2021, at the age of 87, our beloved mother, grandmother and best friend passed away at the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.

She leaves behind her son Mark (Maryna), daughter Maria Walters (Ashley), five grandchildren: Avery, Tia, Kaitlynn & Logan in Edmonton, and Yeva Maria in Ukraine.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of unit 54 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their endless dedication and kind support.

Eternal Memory Mom!!

Mark, Maria and family. Sandra Emmett and I would like to express our deepest and most sincere condolences on the passing of your mother. Your mother was always welcoming when I would visit Whitehorse and made the most delicious bread. May she rest in peace.

Dear Mark and Maria, I was saddened to hear of Eva’s passing. We owe her so much for her care of Helen and Colin (only two of her “littles” that she cherished over the years). I so enjoyed seeing her around Whitehorse before she moved! And I still remember when Tom invited her over to have supper and teach him how to make perogies…she soon lost patience with his trying to get her to tell him exact measurements, and just took over the perogy-making herself! It was a fun time! All the very best to you and your families.
