Gladys Clara LOOWELL

It is with a heavy heart, much love, and beautiful memories that we announce the sudden passing of Gladys Loowell (nee Simon) on May 1, 2023, at the age of 84 surrounded by family.

Gladys was born on March 27, 1939, in Telfordville, Alberta to Edward and Edna Simon. Gladys was the second oldest of 9 children and grew up on a farm. After leaving the family farm at the age of 15, Gladys worked as a Nanny and a Ward-Aid at the University Hospital.

Gladys met her husband Bruce Loowell of 55 years in 1966 and they married in 1967. Together they had two children Mark (Laurie) Loowell and Marina (Lee Mulvahill) Loowell. Gladys has three grandchildren, Makaila, Ryen, and Larsen.

Once married with a family of her own, Gladys stayed home with Mark and Marina until they attended grade school and then worked in a senior’s lodge for 25 years until her retirement. Gladys took pride in caring for others whether it be her own family or others and making her house a home. She loved to cook and bake and her passion was enjoyed by many.

Gladys was predeceased by her mother; Edna (nee Siegel), her father; Edward Simon, her sister: Rosaline Betke, and her brother; Terry Simon.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years; Bruce Loowell; children: Mark (Laurie) and Marina (Lee Mulvahill); grandchildren: Makaila, Ryen, and Larsen.

Gladys is also lovingly remembered by numerous siblings, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Family and friends are welcome to gather in celebration of Gladys’ life. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10014-81 Avenue.

My favourite memory of Auntie Gladys was when we met up with her and Uncle Bruce in Jasper at Maligne Lake Chalet where they have life sized Brewster outfitter guides made out of wood that you can take your picture with. Auntie Gladys was taking a picture of Mom and me when I put my arm around one and said, “How do you like my new boyfriend? He doesn’t talk much or be too grabby!” She called me a silly girl.
I will always remember how giving she was with her special treats of jam and salsa made from her garden and wondered how she kept her figure with all those sweets she was baking, I guess the idea is to give it away, not eat it 🙂 May she rest in peace in the comfort of God’s arms with good hearing now. Our deepest heartfelt condolences to Uncle Bruce, Mark, Marina and family from Marilyn, Garth, Alanna and Chase Schiele. Gladys will also be deeply missed by her sister Marlene Kennedy. 🕊

Our family has lost a dear friend and neighbour. For over 45 years, we enjoyed the generous friendship Gladys showed to us, from after-school care for Anna and Roshanne to discussing gardening and recipes from such an accomplished baker.
We are truly fortunate to have so many happy memories of those years with Gladys, and will miss her greatly.
    Zard, Valerie, Anna and Roshanne
