It is with broken hearts that we share Karl’s passing. Karl was pure light, love and laughter. His life was so beautifully lived and deserves to be beautifully remembered.
Please join us in celebrating the life of our Karl on March 23 at 12:00pm at the Derrick Golf & Winter Club 3500 119 Street. Karl was a lover of clothes and fashion. In his honour, please wear bright colours, one of his shirts or something he would get a kick out of.
Karl had such a wide group of dear friends and we would love it if you could share any pix of you and Karl here.
Parking is limited so carpool or allow yourself plenty of time. Be sure to check out the parking at the back of the building and/or allow time to park in the neighbourhood and walk over.

Everyone who knows Karl knows that he was raised in Edmonton and never stopped cheering for his Oilers (just ask Laura what happens if you interrupt the game!). What you may not know is that Karl also spent summers at the family cottage in Ontario, a year in California when he was 5, and a year in Portugal when he was 12; all of which are where he developed his love of travel and adventure.
Karl’s love of sports started from the minute he could walk, spending any time outdoors that he could. Playing hockey on the backyard rink, kicking a soccer ball, riding his BMX bike, and hot dogging on the slopes whether at Snow Valley or the mountains. He competed in swimming and wrestling and was an avid soccer and tennis player. He even competed in downhill ski racing last winter while wearing his Optune device and going through chemo! His love of sports and enjoying the great outdoors is most definitely a torch that he has passed on to his sons, Kai and Jax. And he was never happier than when he was watching his boys play soccer or racing each other down the hill and competing to see who caught more air.
But it was never Karl to stay in one lane. He had a passion for all things creative. He would see what others see and think about it in a way no one ever thought about. Poetry, theatre arts, radio productions, comedy, t-shirts, ads, commercials, music – life was his muse.
And yet more than all of that, Karl had a special place in his heart for people. He loved hearing everyone’s story, enjoyed a good banter and would always find ways to keep everyone laughing. If you were talking to Karl, there was never any doubt that you were talking to the real, genuine Karl. No matter who you are or what you are about, Karl was always the real McCoy.
Dad, husband, son, brother, friend – these are all hats he wore even better than his many, many hats (if you know you know) and each of these people is better for having had Karl in their lives.
It’s such a rare human who can embody compassion, kindness, selflessness, creativity and wild, face-splitting humour but that was our Karl. And while the hole he leaves is unfillable, the way he lived his purpose-driven life of love will stay with all of us and forever be his legacy.
I’ll never forget Karl’s positive nature, sense of humour, and his warmth. My deepest condolences to his family.
Growing up on the other side of the block from the Schuller’s, I have so many fond memories of my brother Seth & I playing with Karl and Sonja. From Greenfield School operettas to neighbourhood bike rides and birthday parties. Sending sincere condolences and our deepest love on behalf of the Radke family.

On behalf of all of us at Snow Valley, our sincerest condolences go out to Laura and family and his extended family and friends. Karl was a big part of our Snow Valley family as well and we will miss him dearly. He always brought a big smile when he was here. He had so much love for our ski hill and skiing with his family brought him much joy. Karl served as a Board President and as a member for many years giving back and we are thankful for his contributions. Our heart is with you all at this difficult time.

It was such a pleasure to serve on the Snow Valley board with Karl. It was so easy to be at ease and enjoy his company and contribution not only in our board work but in a personal way that only genuine people can share. I am saddened that such bright lights in our lives leave us too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with family and many friends. Bless your heart and soul Karl.
