Elizabeth Anne BEARD

Elizabeth Anne Beard, age 87, died in Edmonton, Alberta on April 2, 2025. Beth was born on December 2, 1938, to Muriel Eugene Fenton and Karl James Rettie in Eston, Saskatchewan.

Beth grew up and was educated, for the most part, in Saskatoon. She was an exceptionally bright student who graduated from Nutana Collegiate in 1956, and the Saskatoon Academy, Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists, at University Hospital in 1958. It was during her lab tech practicum in Melfort that she met her husband of 60 years, William Morley Beard. They were married in Melfort on June 26, 1961, and had their three children while living in Prince Albert over the ensuing decade.

The family moved for a short time to Regina in the early 1970s and subsequently settled in Saskatoon where Beth and Morley spent most of their adult lives. When her children were young, Beth became a realtor and molded her hours to family life and her children’s busy school and swimming schedules. She later transitioned her career to real estate conveyancing with Schulman law firms.  A life-long learner and voracious reader, Beth was a talented pianist who taught many children their first notes and chords.

In retirement, Beth and Morley moved full-time to the Resort Village of Mistusinne on Lake Diefenbaker where they built a beautiful cabin, enjoyed lake life, and golfed in the summer months. In the winter, they escaped to Florida for more golfing and the much warmer weather. Beth served as village Mayor for several years, leading it through crucial decisions in its early development. Beth and Morley’s final move was to Moose Jaw where they enjoyed gardening and waited for winter to end so they could garden again.

After Morley’s passing in 2020, Beth moved to Edmonton to be closer to her oldest daughter. At the age of 83 she figured out how to transition to a new province, re-acquired her driver’s licence, and made her way around the river valley like a pro. She loved her grand dogs, Finnigan and Casey, and it was their visits that thrilled her most. She kept a stash of dog biscuits that made her very popular with both pups.

Beth was predeceased by her parents, husband, and older sister Judith Nina McAskill and brother-in-law Donald John McAskill. She is survived by her three daughters, Paula Beard (Larry Burnstad), Shauna Beard and Laura Beard. She is also survived by her nieces and nephew, Laurie McAskill (Jerry), Bruce McAskill (Susan), and Bonnie McAskill (Shaun).

Beth died as she lived: on her own terms. She knew it was time and was unwavering in her decision. The family would like to thank Dr. Jesmin Akter for her care and kindness, and the Medical Assistance in Dying team for their support and gentle release from this world. There will be no service as requested by Beth.

Beth was a great Lady! Very strong and she had a great sense of humor! Even though she moved to Edmonton, we were able to keep in contact over the years. Bless her soul.
