Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Victoria Gartner left this world with dignity and grace. She was 82 years of age.
She was extremely proud to be a registered nurse for over 42 years with years of dedication at Alberta Hospital and Regional Mental Health. Victoria will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years Edwin, their three children: Claudette (Richard) Krentz, Christie (Dan) Mattiussi both of Edmonton, Gary Gartner of Red Deer, five grandchildren: Stephanie Krentz (Alan Heck), Douglas Krentz, Lindsay Abrahart (Chris Myers), Danica Mattiussi (Andrew Peard), Kaylie (Darren) D’Andrea, great-grandchildren: Abbie, Alex, Bennett and Quinn.
Victoria also leaves her sisters: Fedelia Sharun, Bernice (Bud) Van Iderstine, Phyllis McIntosh (Ken Loren). She was predeceased by her parents Frances and Russell Bilobrowka and Rosa and Adam Gartner, sister Katherine Gubersky, grandson-in-law Matthew Abrahart and brother-in-law Ken Sharun.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Parish, 9420 – 163 Street, Edmonton, AB.

Victoria Pearl Gartner was born in Lamont, Alberta on November 10th, 1940 to Frances and Russell Bilobrowka. She was their first-born followed by Katherine, Fedelia, Bernice and Phyllis.
As a young 17 year old woman, she left home to pursue nursing. Victoria began her nursing studies at Alberta Hospital, Edmonton in 1958. Of 36 students enrolled in the Registered Psychiatric Nursing Program, Victoria was 1 of 6 to graduate in 1961. Victoria was the first student to have scrubbed-in for the Operating Room in 1960. She did such an excellent job that the School of Nursing increased the rotation times so all 3rd year students could have this experience.
On October 21st, 1961, Victoria married the love of her life, Ed. Soon after their wedding day, they bought their first home. Knowing they wanted a few children, they decided they would need a bigger home. In 1964, they built their dream home to raise their children Claudette, Christie and Gary.
Although busy raising a family, nursing remained important to her. Victoria was also one of the first female nurses to work on a male unit in 1967. In 1978, she became the Head Nurse on the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at Alberta Hospital, Edmonton. Like her namesake Queen Victoria, she took her duties towards her patients very seriously. She often worked late and went in on her days off. She brought her creative and artistic talents to special projects especially around the various holidays to brighten the lives of those in her care.
After she lost her vision in 1981, she returned to work in 1984. She initially was the Volunteer Coordinator at Alberta Mental Health Services and soon after became a Therapist with Alberta Mental Health. She retired from her nursing profession in 2003, giving her more time to explore her creative and artistic talents.
She loved spending time horseback riding, gardening, cooking, home design and, of course, continuing to guide and mentor her expanding family.
During the last couple of weeks of her life, she faced her greatest challenge with grace and dignity. She ensured that her last lesson to all was to face adversity with strength, courage and love.

I had the absolute honor to meet Ed and Vicky 15 or so years ago. We became instant friends. Vicky was such a caring, compassionate, soft soul it was easy to love her. She taught me so much!
