Dokja GIRAN

Growing up, I remember how much my mom loved going shopping and listening to music. My mom didn’t spend lavishly, often she bought items that were on sale or even secondhand. At our peak, we were visiting West Edmonton Mall around once per month. Sometimes we went by bus, other times I drove us.

Mom always had the radio on. Music was always playing in our home— some 80s, mostly oldies, CHQT 880 AM was her station of choice most of the time. She was a fan of Julio Iglesias, one time we saw him in concert together at the Coliseum in Edmonton. Many of you don’t know, one of her favourite songs was “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M. She said it was cool.

Mom and I often ate at restaurants. We were regulars at Boston Pizza, Bulgogi House, and Double Greeting Wonton House. Speaking of Double Greeting-our usual order was 2 wonton soup and 1 chicken fried rice (to share). The place is old, but the food is good and fairly inexpensive.

Mom loved to visit lakes and mountains. She said seeing open water was refreshing to her eyes. I couldn’t agree more. We were fortunate to see lakes in Alberta and British Columbia together.

Her time at Waterford was short but she was always treated with warmth and kindness by the staff and residents there. One resident I recall, would see mom in the dining area and come near to her table to offer a deep bow. (A sign of respect in Korea.) Ma noticed this, I think she was flattered by this gesture.

Whenever I was getting ready to go out or about to do something important, mom would say in Korean—no matter what you do, it is good/fine. What a positive message to instill in a child!

I am thankful God chose Donna to be my mom.

As far as I’m concerned, my mom is royalty.

Proverbs 22:1

“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
