Fern Lois GREEN

Fern Lois Green, May 3, 1927 – March 17, 2026

On the morning of March 17, Fern Lois Green passed away in her sleep.

Fern was born the youngest of 5 children born to Alfred and Lou Bouschard.  While growing up on a farm near Meadow Lake Saskatchewan, she was the apple of her father’s eye.  After leaving school Fern travelled to Battleford Sask. where she trained as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse.  Upon receiving her certification, she worked at the Battleford Hospital until being swept off her feet by a young, dashing Gordon Green.  He drove his Austin A-40 down the sidewalk of the hospital to ask her on their first date.

Fern and Gordon married in 1950 and three years later started their family of three children, Dana, Kelly and Kevin. During the early years of her marriage Fern stayed at home to raise her children.  However, in 1963 the family decided to move to Saskatoon in order that Gordon could attend the University of Sask. to obtain a degree in Commerce.  At that point Fern was called back to nursing part time to contribute to the family funds.

After Gordon graduated and her children were older, Fern set out on a program of self-improvement.  Her first accomplishment was to become a Registered Nurse in 1977.  However, Fern was lured by the closeness of a University Campus and was drawn to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1979. This qualification led to her being employed by the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, where she finished her working career as a Nursing Assistant Instructor in both Regina and Saskatoon.

No description of Fern’s life would be complete without mention of her passion for and involvement in theatre.  Early days found her acting and directing for the Battleford’s Community Players.  She also directed the Ebony Players in an adaptation of “A Raisin in the Sun” for which she was awarded “Most promising Director” at the provincial drama festival in Weyburn.

Upon moving to Saskatoon Fern became involved in both Gateway Players and the Saskatoon Summer players, acting and singing in numerous productions.

After her retirement Fern was able to indulge her passion for travel, visiting China, Portugal, Spain, The British Isles, most western European Countries and numerous trips to a time share in Mexico.  Also, during her retirement years, she switched from acting in theatre to creating costumes.  She designed and sewed dozens of costumes for South Pacific, Lil Abner, Camelot & many more productions. Well into her ’80’s she laboured long hours to create fabulous garments.

In 2012 Fern and Gordon relocated to Edmonton, Alberta to be closer to their three children.  They settled in Churchill Manor and became regulars at Tim Hortons.

Unfortunately, nature was not kind to Fern in her final years.  This smart, beautiful and kind person was stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease.  In 2022 she had to be moved into full-time care where she gradually disappeared from the world. One fortunate result of her disease is that she was not aware when Gordon passed away in 2022 after 74 years of marriage.

Left to cherish memories of Fern’s life are Dana Ryffel (Hans), Kelly Green (John Schmitke) and Kevin and Margaret.

A beautifully written memory for a beautiful person. As a nephew, my “Aunt Fern” was so very special. As a ten year old, her wedding was my first to attend. She was fun to be with and I will always remember her laughter. We kept in touch over the years and I am grateful for that. My Mother (Pauline) was very close to her and they had many a good times together. Throughout her life, Aunt Fern maintained that certain Grace Kelly elegance. Her involvement in drama and costume making was so her. I will miss her.
To Dana, Kelly and Kevin, please accept my sympathy in the loss of your Mother. Hugs. Barry Rafuse
