Nicole Catherine GUINAN

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Nicole Catherine Guinan, who left us too soon on March 31, 2025. Born on March 10, 1986, in Saskatoon, Nicole spent her early years in Watrous before moving to Westlock, Alberta. Over the years, she made homes in Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Victoria, BC, and Wainwright, before settling in Sturgeon County.

Nicole was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, and mother known for her kindness, humor, and the warmth she brought to everyone around her. She had a way of making people feel welcome, with her bright spirit shining in every room she entered. From a young age, she was drawn to animals, a love that shaped her life’s journey. It was her lifelong dream to become part of an animal rescue, and she fulfilled her dream as the Vice President and Adoptions Manager of Alberta Homeward Hound Rescue Bureau, making a lasting impact on both the organization and the countless animals she cared for.

Nicole’s passion for animals started early—so much so that, as a child, she would sneak away from home just to visit a neighbor’s Pomeranians. She had a gentle soul, never unkind to anyone or any creature. Her love for dogs played a pivotal role in her life when she met her partner, Robert Machin, at a dog park while they were both out walking their pets. Their connection was instant, and in June 2010, they began to build a life together- one filled with love, laughter, children, and a home full of cherished pets.

At just fourteen years old, Nicole’s determination led her to convince Georges Laraque to meet with her family and friends, a connection that would later become deeply meaningful. When Nicole faced her battle with cancer, Georges became a source of support, standing by her in her fight. She also found strength in Heidi and Fernando Pisani, whose kindness and care provided comfort during her most difficult moments.

Beyond her love for animals, Nicole had a deep passion for music. She was an avid jazz band player and found joy in the melodies that filled her life. She also had a talent for gardening, finding peace in nurturing flowers and plants. In her professional life, she dedicated herself to helping others as a clerk at Glenrose Hospital and as a Human Resources Manager at Snapshot Deliveries.

She is survived by her loving parents, Roxanne and Daniel ; her two older brothers, Chris and Curtis (Danielle); her devoted partner, Robert, who was the love of her life and closest companion; and her two children, Gavin (13) and Layla (12) who were the light of her life.

Nicole’s presence brought joy to those around her, and her kindness left an imprint on everyone she met. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A celebration of life will be held on April 27, 2025, from 1-4 PM at Cattail Crossing Golf and Winter Club, 24427 Township Road 542, Sturgeon County. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Cross Cancer Institute or a local animal rescue, such as Nicole’s beloved Alberta Homeward Hound Rescue Bureau.

Nicole’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

I’m so sad for your loss. Nicole was a fun student to teach and I enjoyed coaching her basketball. Her gentle sense of humour was always welcome even when she kept the class in the bus for a little extra time in Drumheller. My sincere condolences for your losses and I will pray for Nicole and her family.

To Nicole’s family- my deepest condolences for your loss. I met Nicole when I started working at the Glenrose in June 2010. I was a recent grad from nursing school and was very nervous as I waited for my first day of orientation. Nicole was at the front desk and asked if I was the new hire. She told me I was going to love working there and that everyone was so nice. What a difference she made on my first day and throughout my time with her on the unit. She was a shining example of kindness and set the tone for the whole unit. I was very lucky to have started there when I did. Nicole made such a positive impact and I will strive to make others feel as welcome as she made me. My heart goes out to her whole family. ♥️
