Paulette Joan HAGEL

Paulette was a remarkable woman who led an unconventional life. She was born in England on December 20, 1935, emigrating to Canada in 1959 with her husband and three young children. Paulette’s youngest child, Rebecca would be born in their new home in Edmonton, Alberta.

Paulette was 36 years old and a single mother when she graduated from the University of Alberta in 1971 with a Bachelor of Education. She spent her career helping others, at various times working as a substitute teacher, a community counselor with Alberta Legal Aid, a LIfe Skills Coach, and host of several successful bed and breakfasts.

Throughout her life Paulette was a proud socialist, active member of the New Democrats, lifelong learner and political activist. She sat on many different boards, ran for office provincially in both Alberta and B.C., worked on innumerable political campaigns and was part of the Raging Grannies activist group.

Paulette was always busy. She loved entertaining, gardening, “doing her art”, spending time with family, organizing fundraising events, reading, theatre and music.

She received Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) on Thursday, October 8, 2026. She passed away peacefully at the age of 90 with her family by her side. Paulette was active and healthy until suffering an unexpectedly serious infection.

Paulette was predeceased by her loving husband and co-conspirator in life, David Hagel (2024), her son-in-law, Derek Drager (2024) and her grandson, Grady O’Brien (2025).

She is survived by her four children: Deborah, Rebecca, Teresa and Timothy (Teresa).

Four grandchildren: Erin (Brad), Jason (Courtney), Sam (Jackie), and Scott.

Four great-grandchildren: Addison, Heidi, Tanner, and Tilly.

Donations in memory of Paulette can be made to the Edmonton Food Bank.

An Open House Celebrating Paulette’s life will be held at the Westend Seniors Activity Centre (9629 – 176 street) on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 2 – 4 p.m.
