Paulette Mary HAGEN

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Paulette Mary Hagen, who passed away peacefully on July 16th, 2026, at the age of 81, in Stony Plain, Alberta, surrounded by the love of her family.

Paulette Mary Hagen (née Hesse) was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose kindness touched countless lives.

Paulette was born in Rivière Qui Barre, Alberta, on January 14, 1945. She married the love of her life, Arthur (Art) Hagen, in 1963. At the time, Art was teaching at Alexander Reserve. Together, they built a family grounded in love, faith, and compassion. They began their family in High Level, Alberta, while Art accepted a teaching position in Meander River. His teaching career eventually brought them to Whitecourt, Alberta, where they raised their family. Together, they were blessed with four children: Stephen (Cindy) Hagen, Angela (Stuart) Nickolson, Duane (Natalie) Hagen and Deanna Hagen (Greg Dussome).

While living in Whitecourt, Paulette became affectionately known as “Grandma Hagen” through the day home she lovingly operated. She welcomed children with warmth, patience, homemade meals, and a caring heart, leaving a lasting impression on generations of families.

In 2004, Paulette and Art moved to Spruce Grove, where they enjoyed their retirement years together. Nothing brought Paulette and Art greater joy than spending time with their nine grandchildren: Taylor (Spencer) Hewlett, Cole Nickolson, Haley Nickolson (Luke Evans), Connor Hagen (Kiana Fara), Nick Hagen, Zack Hagen (Emma Yacyshen), Ashley Dussome (Jacob Mogg), Caitlin (Mathew) Llwellyn, and Jesse Hagen.

She was also blessed with four cherished great-grandchildren: Joey and Sawyer Llwellyn and Ari and Ivy Hewlett.

Paulette also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews: Kevin (Sandy) Hesse, Lessane (Dave) Lutz, Trevor (Andrea) Hesse, and Clayton (Leanne) Hesse, as well as her sister-in-law, Cathy Hesse.

Paulette was predeceased by her father, Fredrick (Fritz) Hesse (1963); her stepfather, Albert Boisjoli (1992); her beloved husband, Arthur Hagen (2008); her mother, Theresa Hesse-Boisjoli (née Dandeneau) (2008); and her brother, Oliver Hesse (2024).

Paulette found joy in cooking, gardening, curling, volunteering, camping, and playing cards with family and friends. Above all, her deep Catholic faith guided her life and inspired her compassion, quiet strength, generosity, honesty, and unwavering love for others. Her legacy of faith, kindness, strength, integrity, and devotion to family will live on in all who knew and loved her.

We were truly blessed to have Paulette in our lives for 81 wonderful years. She will be deeply missed by her family, her many friends, her community, and her extended family throughout Canada and Germany, all of whom loved her dearly.

Paulette’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of the Good Samaritan Stony Plain Care Centre, as well as to everyone who provided her with such tender and loving care throughout the past ten years. She courageously faced Alzheimer’s disease with remarkable grace, dignity, and resilience, always surrounded by the love of her family. Your kindness, patience, and dedication brought comfort not only to Paulette, but to our entire family, and will never be forgotten.

Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Paulette’s life and legacy at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Spruce Grove, Alberta. Service details will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories in Paulette’s memory.
