Alice (Elsie) Kovacich November 25,1931 – October 22, 2026
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Alice (Elsie) Kovacich, of Edmonton, Alberta on October 22, 2026, at age 94.
Elsie was raised on a small farm just east of Sheho, Saskatchewan by her father and mother Nick and Lena Hudyma alongside her brother, Walter. Those early years were simple but challenging having to walk to and from school some two miles. Shortly after her graduation, the family moved off the farm to the town of Sheho and Elsie made plans to build a new life. Her travels took her east to Winnipeg where she began a career with Eaton’s. Working as a floor attendant and cashier she quickly advanced within the company and transferred to Edmonton where she held a senior position in accounting, retiring after 35 years of service.
During her time in Edmonton, Elsie would meet the love of her life Michael Kovacich in a dance hall on Whyte Avenue. They were married on November 17,1973 and would spend 52 years together dedicated to building a home and welcoming friends and family whenever time permitted. Auntie was always available to help when asked and knew the joy that a home cooked meal would bring to anyone who dropped in. As a consummate gardener and canner, you never left without a special jar of jam, home baked biscuits, or a bag of vegetables. In her later years she also enjoyed Tai Chi until her health declined.
She is survived by her husband Michael, sister-in-law Katica Mihelcic of Croatia, and Mandica Dujmovic of Windsor, nephew Wade (Catherine) Hudyma of Calgary, niece Dawn (Jason) MacAuley of Prince Albert and several great nephews and nieces.
Elsie is predeceased by her parents Nick (Lena) Hudyma and brother Walter (June) Hudyma.
Thank you to the staff at the Grey Nuns hospital for your kind and compassionate care during her final days. Arrangements are being handled through West Pointe Funeral Services with a graveside service to be held at St. Michael’s Cemetery on Friday October 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM.
Auntie, you will be missed, rest in peace.
