Henry Onufrey KUCHER
KUCHER, HENRY ONUFREY of Edmonton, originally from the farming district of Shandro, Alberta, passed away peacefully, on July 18, 2024, at the age of 95.
Henry was a strong confident individual that had a quest for knowledge and helping his fellow man.
Born on June 22, 1929, to Toedor (Fred) and Anastascia Kucher; Henry experienced many hardships growing up during the great depression and World War II. In 1945 he completed grade 11, and at the age of 16 made a short stint in the Royal Canadian Navy, followed by working at the Swift packing plant in Edmonton, and various construction jobs throughout Alberta.
In 1952 he married Jantji (Joan) Zylstra who immigrated to Canada from Kampen Holland. Together, Henry and Joan built a beautiful life that centered around their children: Mariann, Paul, Henry (Ted), and Gerry. Their home was always open to all and was a haven to their kids, grandkids, friends, and neighbors.
Henry was a man who was always there with a helping hand. He loved music and learning. Henry could be found with his nose in a book and his chin on fiddle. In His quest for learning in 1954 he obtained an “Auto body ticket, and then a Bachelor of Education from the U of A in 1971. His exemplary teaching enlightened many young students at McKay Avenue Jr. High, Westmount Jr. High, M.E. LaZert High, and Ellersillie Jr. High.
He cultivated a legacy of learning and service in his loving children, becoming a full-time care giver to his son Gerry in 1989. In 1994 he retired and focused on family, friends, and his passion for knowledge. He was deeply cherished by his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
As per Henry’s wishes we will be hosting a Celebration of Life on July 31 at the Kingsway Legion 14339-50 St. NW Edmonton at 2:30 pm. Please join the family for a drop in visit with friends to share memories and stories.
