Jane Catherine MacPHERSON

Jane Catherine MacPherson (nee: MacAskill)

Our family sadly announces the peaceful passing of Jane Catherine MacPherson (MacAskill) of Fox Creek, Alberta and former resident of Englishtown on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at the hospital in Fox Creek, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Jane was born on August 1,1936 in Englishtown. She married in 1959 to Malcolm MacPherson and started a family shortly thereafter. They resided in Englishtown for the next 35 years raising two children during this time. Jane became proficient at baking and worked at the Silver Dart Lodge in Baddeck for over 25 years as a pastry cook. Her reputation for tea biscuits, oak cakes and handmade bread carries on. Many of folk would visit our home to enjoy these tasty treats. In her past time, “Granny” as she is known to many enjoyed playing cards (and played to win!) She was a devoted member of the United Church. Jane was very close to her extended family and enjoyed her visits with her brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews throughout the years.

In 1997, Granny and her husband Malcolm embarked on an adventure that seen them depart her beloved Cape Breton home to follow with her daughter and family to relocate in Fox Creek, Alberta. Granny became a fixture within her new community. She was so easy to get to know and was loved by all that knew her.

Jane is predeceased by her husband Malcolm (2009) and beloved daughter Florrie (2014). She is survived by her son Scott MacPherson (Lori) granddaughter (Saige) and son in law Glenn MacLeod and granddaughter Katie Hudson (Izaak) great grandchildren Avery and Mila and Grandson Dylan MacLeod.

Jane’s surviving siblings are; brothers, Kenny and Angus (Marion); sisters, Barbara Egan; brother-in-law, Roderick MacDonald, sister-in-law Donelda MacAskill as well as many nephews and nieces throughout Canada and the United States.

Jane is predeceased by parents, John and Margaret; brothers, Allister (Donna), George (Marguerite), Archibald, and Norman (Patsy) and John; sisters, Jessie (John Christie, Thomas Mudge), Tena (Jim Munroe), Anna (Jim Wilson), Emiline (Carl Campbell), and Carola (Roderick MacDonald), sister-in-law Lillian MacAskill.

There will be no visitation or funeral at this time. A private burial ceremony will be held at a later date in Fox Creek at Jane’s wishes.

In honour of the efforts of the hospital staff, the family asks that anyone who wishes to donate in Jane’s memory to do so in the name of Friends of Fox Creek Hospital Society.

My very deepest condolences to you all on the passing of Jane. I’ve known Jane for years, having been married to her 1st cousin, and lived in Englishtown for several years, plus worked with her at the Silver Dart. I was shocked to hear this news, as I had not heard she was unwell. I pray Almighty God will comfort your hearts and bring you His peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. Some of my happiest memories are being in the kitchen waiting for some pie and ice cream and also following Malcolm out to the shed to see what I could get into. Two of the most amazing people I was so lucky to know. Again I am so sorry for your loss. All my love and prayers are with you all.

She was my grandmother who I only got to meet a few times. I remember being so excited to meet Granny when she came to visit my family when I was little. Even as she got older she’d still remember me on Christmas, holidays, my birthday and whenever she spoke to my dad (her son) on the phone and tell him “tell the girls I say hi and love them”. I wish I was able to be closer to her when I was younger and got to see her more. Granny’s loving and kind soul will be greatly missed. I thank her for being a great grandmother and mother to my dad.
