Harold Eugene NORTHMORE
With profound sadness we regret to announce the passing of Harold Eugene (Harry) Northmore of Stony Plain, Alberta born 7 Oct 1935. He was surrounded by his family and passed away peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital on 7 Dec 2023. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of U of A hospital and the West Edmonton Kidney Care Centre.
Beloved husband to Anne Northmore (Nee Irwin), of 62 years, cherished father to sons Brian Northmore (Diane), Derek Northmore (Melissa), much loved grandfather to granddaughters Meghan and Jenna Northmore. Retiring from the Royal Canadian Air Force after 25 years of service, in 1980 Harry settled in Edmonton, Alberta initially and finally in Stony Plain Alberta, where he remained an avid golfer at the Stony Plain Golf Course.
No service to be held at this time, a ceremony of remembrance will be held in the late spring of 2024. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations to the University of Alberta Foundation (Kidney Program) would be appreciated.
Brians Tribute to Dad
Dad came from a family of 14, 10 brothers and four sisters in Kingston Ontario where the lifestyle was simple and humble. The call to service was not foreign to the Northmore family. His dad fought in the trenches of World War 1, two brothers died shortly after the invasion of Normandy, and two other brothers joined the army shortly before dad signed up to the military. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1954 becoming a Safety Systems Technician. His time in the air force spanned over 25 years. Dad was posted to Grostenquin, France, Bagotville, Quebec, Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Baden Soellingen, Germany and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. By far his favorite postings were to Europe, which were twice during his career in the RCAF. The first was to 2 Wing, Grostenquin in 1959 where he married mom in 1961. They lived in humble accommodations near the base where dad serviced F 86 Sabres and toured Europe for three remarkable years. This also gave him the opportunity to see his brothers graves in Normandy of whom he was very proud of. Dad was blessed with a second European tour this time to Baden Soellingen from 1974 to 1978 working on the venerable CF 104s. Our mother ensured almost every weekend and vacation time was filled with skiing and camping all over Europe as a family which dad immensely enjoyed and developed his love of the mountains.
Dad would reflect on his times of his family from Kingston often talking about the
exploits of his siblings and how they were doing. He thoroughly enjoyed the visits
from his sister Lorraine her husband Reg and other sister Alice at his various posting locations. He enjoyed seeing his family in Kingston when he was able and was very fond of his niece Bonnie (Alice’s daughter). Dad kept in touch with Bonnie and was especially glad to see when she visited a few years ago.
Retiring out of the military in 1980 from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Edmonton,
Alberta, dad transitioned to civilian life working, developing his ski form and learning to golf. Mom and he fortunately were able to retire near the same time and perfected their golf game together by living in Stony Plain near the golf course. Derek and Melissa provided two beautiful daughters who dad greatly adored and would tell many a story of his travels, and experiences, with of course an embellishment which would make Meghan and Jenna smile and giggle with delight. Dad liked to assist Derek with his house projects, I think by sipping on a beer and directing mostly. He enjoyed many outings, camping trips and many fine meals with Derek and Melissa.
Dad was able to enjoy some exotic travel once more, in 2014 and 2016 dad and mom travelled to Hawaii with me and Diane where his eyes were shiny like a new born, taking in all that Hawaii had to offer. He loved seeing the whales, aquatic life, and Island entertainment of the Luaus in Maui to exploring the history at Pearl Harbour. His last chances to see Europe again were realized twice more on visiting Diane and I in Naples, Italy in 2017 and 2019. He was able to visit new places in Europe, but more importantly go visit some familiar places where he skied and camped when posted to Germany in the 70s.
Dad fought a valiant fight against kidney disease and even as dialysis took a toll on him, he would fight it three times a week and courageously endured it all to ensure he could care for mom. Even in his last throws at the hospital he attempted to leave to be with mom to provide her care even though he was too weak. His thoughts were of mom and the family in his last hours.
Rest easy, rest easy dad, mom is surrounded by the loving sons you raised and their families who will care for her greatly.

While we hate to lose a loved one, sometimes the time has come. May he rest in peace. My love to Anne and family
I lost a loving and caring Uncle, whom I already miss immensely. I valued the opportunity to visit my Uncle Harold & Aunt Anne a few years ago. He gave me some valuable words of wisdom while on that vacation.
Deep condolences to Uncle Harold’s family.

Your niece,
