KENNETH LORNE ROLFE

1947 – 2024

My husband Ken was an amazing person. He never judged anybody, and he deeply loved the people in his life. His immediate family of 3 brothers (Tom, Louis and Terry) and his sister (Bonnie) were very important to him.  He maintained a very strong connection with them all. I loved that his family was the kind that you could just drop in and they always welcomed you with “you’re staying for dinner… right?”. With long distance between us we still stayed close, and I am so happy we all celebrated Christmas in the summer of 1988 at Tom’s and everybody was there including Ken’s Mom. It was incredible.

Ken’s youth was spent participating in many sports. He still is in contact with friends from his neighbourhood and he was able to visit Mike two years ago and they toured their old haunts. Ken was the MVP in junior Football and was drafted to the Alouettes two years in a row.

I met Ken in November of 1973 when I introduced him to my best friend Rose. They had one date and Rose announced he was not for her. When I returned home the next day with Rose for dinner, My Mother asked “Who is Ken Rolfe? He has called you 10 times today!” Rose said, “That would be my date from last night” The jig was up…. We have been together since then. Ken’s dream was to work internationally as a telephone system installer. He was accepted to a 2-year contract in Nigeria that was cancelled but Ken did go to Saudi Arabia in 1977. I have a shoe box filled with our daily letters we sent each other – that I cherish.

Our 50th Anniversary would be August 24th this year. It has been an amazing marriage built on love, trust, Family values and companionship. Ken always supported me and my crazy ideas. He never said no to me.  We decided that the person who cared the most would make any decisions that we disagreed on. Luckily, I usually cared more. Ken and I were both overjoyed to have been blessed with our 3 kids – Cassandra, Jennifer and Gregory. They have blessed us with 3 wonderful grands – Rudy, Mabel and Ivy. We love nothing more than when they are all in the house together. Ken was adamant that he wants our many family traditions to continue. Our best memory was our family trip to Cancun when the girls’ partners were included allowing us to get to know Caleb and Dan better.

Ken and I loved our travels when we were away and not tied down with responsibilities. We once drove from Montreal to Miami to bring a car down to a senior couple and then flew home. We loved Hawaii best and indeed our future plan will see Ken sitting on our bench under the Banyan tree in Lahaina (the fire damage has not killed the tree) waiting for me. Cruises were another favourite that we loved. Visiting family in other cities was also enjoyed.

As we say goodbye to Ken, we are so thankful that in 2008 his bypass operation gave us 16 extra years to enjoy him. Those were what we called bonus years, and we lived them well. Ken had a very good life and was extremely well loved by his family and also many good friends. He got along with everybody.

We are thankful for the excellent care Ken received at the Sturgeon Hospital, the Choice program at Dickensfield (which he so enjoyed), The Fort Saskatchewan Hospital and lastly Foyer Lacombe where he passed.

Ties to the past led to good friendship in the past few years. Ken was warm and welcoming and so it was easy to reconnect. We enjoyed get togethers at the lake, coffee shops, and poolside. We will miss those times spent together, and Ken we will dearly miss you. Cheryl, our most sincere thoughts of care are shared with you.

50 years of marriage and 3 lovely children and grandchildren. One is never prepared for the disruption that occurs after so many years together. Your love for each other was notable and in turn produced many wonderful memories. May these memories comfort you during this time of change.
