So sad to hear of Katie’s passing. We only met once at Stuart and Pamela’s wedding, and enjoyed her and Jessica’s company. But as Stuart’s parents living in Scotland, we heard Katie mentioned so often and know what a strong friendship they had. She will be sorely missed by so many . Condolences to all her family and friends x

I am so lucky to have been hired at UMA to work alongside Katie nearly19 years ago. Almost immediately, we surpassed the Work Friend designation and were True Friends that just happened to work together. There are far too many good memories, adventures, and sometimes work, to recount. She was always up on the latest fashion trends, adopted a skin care routine well before it was the thing to do on social media, loved a fun cocktail while always being the responsible one in the group, played the best boardgames, looked up fun horoscopes for everyone, was confident we could win the lotto and loved a scratcher, ate at all the best restaurants, was a great cook and loved to support local suppliers and markets, was great on a trivia team, travelled as much as she could, and always gave the best, straightforward advice. She was the best friend, and will be missed forever.
It was an honour to spend time with her family at the hospital. Sending my deepest condolences to everyone that loved her.

I was so heartbroken to hear about Katie. She was the quiet one in the office, always diligently working, but with a big grin and giggle whenever you stopped by to chat with her. Rest easy Katie, you were far too young to leave us.

Katie, my friend. You were responsible, practical, reasoned and logical. My balance. The one who took my wallet out of the garbage literally but also figuratively in so many situations. And, you were so fun. There are too many adventures and jokes and silly stories to count. Plus, My kids adore you, evidenced by you being the only adult who can go to their <20 party without a fake ID. Thank you Katie for all the good times, the advice, and the friendship. I thought you would always be a part of my life, and it’s heart breaking and hard to believe that won’t be true. A day won’t go by without me thinking of you.

Thank you Gloria, Neil, Heather and Jon, for letting me feel like part of her family these last couple weeks. My deepest heartfelt condolences.

Katie was the first friend I made when I moved to Canada, and one of my very best ones. You were also one of the first to get used to my accent and would often act as translator for me in many situations. Crucially you also shared my intense dislike of all things banana related, I couldn’t have wished for a better work partner for that reason alone!

I’ve been very lucky to have you in my life, and I hope that you felt even a fraction of the same luck the other way round. I know you’ll be laughing at me forever for things like not knowing how to use a combination lock… The Unknown Challenge team will never quite be the same again.

    Love you lots Katie!

I met Katie at work while participating in Corporate Challenge events together. But our friendship really took off with an innocent, “are you playing Pokemon Go right now? Do you want to do this raid together?” Our adventures quickly surpassed the confines of work, and we traveled around the city looking for all the rare Pokemon, and of course, stopping for great food and bubble teas. From there, our hangouts expanded into video game sessions, board game nights, mahjong, and tennis and Olympics pools. Somehow, Katie also allowed me into her extremely exclusive lottery group, and introduced me to four more of my best friends.

Katie once told me that she believed that every day could be better than the last. And even in the face of her diagnosis, she lived this motto. She was always hopeful that things could improve, and that there was something to look forward to around the corner. Her attitude and joy for life will stay with me forever. Thank you, Katie, for allowing me into your life, and for impacting mine so profoundly.

My deepest condolences to all of Katie’s family, friends, and loved ones.

I had the privilege of working with Katie for the past three years. From the moment I joined the Giant Mine project, she supported me wholeheartedly, sharing background information, context, and key insights without hesitation. I always found her to be an incredibly kind and thoughtful person, a supportive teammate, and a highly knowledgeable and technically strong engineer.

Katie made a meaningful impact on everyone she worked with, both professionally and personally. Her positive presence and collaborative spirit will be deeply missed within our team.

I am truly saddened by her loss. My heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy go to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

I know Katie will be incredibly missed by all who knew her. Not only will I miss a fellow trivia partner, fellow boardgame player, and friend, but I will miss a confidant and mentor when it comes to spec writing. Spec writing has become a bittersweet activity where I realize she is no longer at the other end of a teams chat to impart what I always perceived as her infinite wisdom, or to join me in my complaints about shitty specs. I will always be incredibly grateful that I went out of my comfort zone and begrudgingly filled in for Unknown Challenge during Corporate Challenge 2025 as I cherish that one of my last memories of Katie is running around West Edmonton Mall doing silly contests and having a blast.

Who would have thought a common interest in video games could lead to such a great friendship Katie. I’m so happy Jo introduced us several years back. What started as hangouts at the mall with you both for Pokemon led to, more importantly, concerts and good food and Animal Crossing and Korean Dramas and of course, mahjong.

You have brought so much joy, not in the grand gestures, but in the kindness and thoughtfulness in day to day life. Sharing songs, and recipes and restaurant recommendations, and sharing that hot gossip from our respective workplaces. You made going through the pandemic, not that bad at all.

Even in the last week we got to spend together, you were asking how I was doing, and introducing me to your other wonderful friends that I’ve heard so many great anecdotes and stories about. You brought up the best stories and memories of 12 bars, of my overly buttered turkey legs, or the fun pop-up restaurants we tried out.

Thank you to Heather, Neil, and Gloria, for allowing me to crash visit the hospital so much, and showing me your kindness and strength.

And thank you Katie, for just being you, and being such a great friend. I’m going to think of you fondly when I listen to our favourite pop songs and sad boi Noah Kahan music. And I’ll make sure to order some veggies for dinner, “for health” of course. Love you tons.

I feel deeply honoured to have known Katie and worked closely with her from 2006 to 2023. She was someone I could always count on to help solve the thorniest problems and was a wonderful support to me – professionally and personally – on many a challenging project, including some particularly difficult field assignments. Her passing at some a young age is heartbreaking to me. My sincere condolences to her loved ones.
