John Stanley SHARHAN

John Stanley Sharhan was born on January 20, 1941, in Lamont AB to Catherine and William Sharhan.

He had four siblings Elizabeth, Carolyn, Cecil and Russell.  They grew up on a farm outside of Uncas and had many fond memories of life on the farm.  In 1966 his father passed away and shortly thereafter he moved into the city with his mom and youngest brother Russell.

In 1970 he met his one true love Lorraine (Severin) and they married in October 1970.  They had their first daughter Anita in 1971 and their second daughter Sandra in 1972. They bought a house in the Bellevue community and raised their children.

During his years John played baseball in Uncas and his team did go to the provincials many times.  He often spoke about his years of playing ball and all the antics he and his team got up to.

He was well known for his sense of humor, and he was master of ceremonies for many of his nieces and nephews’ weddings.  He knew how to make people laugh and would do anything to liven up a party.  There are many stories of him such as putting on a wedding dress during a party and parading around or sitting around a table and regaling everyone with joke after joke.

He loved taking his daughters on afternoon drives to Uncas and stopping at the local store to get a pop, chips and lots of candy! This became a Saturday afternoon tradition that they all enjoyed and is a treasured memory.

John took on the challenge of coaching his daughter’s softball team in their teen years and devoted much to time to making sure they learned from him but most of all had fun.  It was not easy guiding and coaching 15 young girls however he did a great job!

During these years John had his own construction company Dee Rae Construction, and he ran his own grader.  He worked a lot of winters plowing the streets of Edmonton, took on many jobs outside of the city and when not working critiquing other companies as he had many opinions on what a good job should look like!

When not working you could find him on the golf course.  He loved being on the greens with his friends, grabbing some drinks and having a great golf game.  Many times, he would bring his daughter Anita with him to teach her the finer points of golfing and was proud when she managed some great shots.

Many weekends were spent at lifelong friends Rae and Jeanette Majeau playing cards until the early mornings.

John also loved fishing and he enjoyed many of his trips with his sister’s Carolyn family when they went on annual fishing trips.  He loved these times and would talk about them often as he had many fond memories of the Benson trips.

John dearly loved his 9 nieces and 5 nephews and talked about all of them many times.  He had many fond memories of them and talked to his daughters about them often.  He was very proud of them and loved when they called him or whenever they were able to get together for family functions or even for visits.

John had 2 sons in laws Todd Grayson and Chuck King who he spoke of often.  He would drive them crazy however they loved him.

He had three grandsons, Garett, Logan and Spencer Grayson who he loved dearly and talked about with such pride.  They could never do wrong in his eyes!  He loved to impart his wisdom upon them and would take the time to help them out whenever he could.  There were many times where he would help Logan take apart his brakes and teach him how to rebuild.  He loved taking his grandchildren for drives just as he did his daughters.  They loved going with him as they knew it would be a day filled of stories and lots of great treats!!!

Three years ago, John became a great grandfather to Auria who he loved with all his heart.  He was amazed at how smart she is and he always enjoyed when she visited with him.  He started a savings account for her because his dream for her is to be able to have a secondary education as in his words “She is going to do great things”.  He made sure to save all his empty bottles to add this little savings nest as well.  There were many times that his daughter and grandson were made to bring home bags of empties.

In the last years of his life John lived in a senior’s apartment on 119 Ave and 66 St in Edmonton where he made many great friends.  In his last three months he moved into Copper Sky in Spruce Grove where he made even more friends.  He was known to tell a good joke at the supper table every evening.

John will be missed by many, many people including all his friends and family.  To all his treasured friends in his life he loved you deeply and was thankful your friendship.

The family will be holding a Celebration of Life in Spring of 2022 when we are hopefully able to be together safely.

My heartfelt sympathy to Anita and Sandy. I’ll always remember how uncle Jonny called me coletteskichuck in his loud booming voice and with a twinkle in his eye. He will be missed.

    With love,
