Brynlee was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a rare and severe underdevelopment of the left side of the heart, accounting for 2-3% of all congenital heart diseases. To survive, HLHS patients require at least three open-heart surgeries, Norwood, Glenn, and Fontan.

Bob died after a brief illness in hospital at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife Connie, son Randy, three grandchildren Noah, Gabriel and Brooklyn, and sister Vera. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Edna Reid, brothers James and Martin, and sisters Mary and Ada.
